PETER MANGAN - Biography
Peter is the Founder of The Freebird Club, a new peer-to-peer social travel and homestay club for people over 50. Freebird offers a new way of travelling for older adults, a means to earn extra money, and a fun accessible way to meet new people and enjoy social interaction in later life.
Peter is a seasoned professional with over 20 years’ experience across diverse sectors including finance, the arts, university research and innovation. He holds B.Comm and MBS degrees from University College Dublin (UCD), and PMP certification for Project Management.
Following a stint in corporate banking in the late 90’s, Peter joined Ireland’s national music organisation Music Network as Finance & Resourcing Manager. He then took on the role of Business & Finance Manager for Ireland’s largest research institute, the Conway Institute of Biomolecular and Biomedical Research in UCD. This led to more senior roles in the unversity, most recently Senior Manager, Research & Innovation; the role he left in 2016 to work full-time on The Freebird Club.
Peter has several years’ experience of home rentals via a house he built in his home-place in Co. Kerry. This provided a deep understanding of the homestay hospitality model, and the logistics involved both online and on the ground. Peter developed the idea for The Freebird Club having witnessed the positive social experiences of his semi-retired father in meeting and befriending fellow senior guests at his Kerry rental home.
Winner of the European Commission’s 2015 European Social Innovation Competition, and finalist in the European Investment Bank’s Social Innovation Tournament in 2016 and 2017, Peter is a passionate social entrepreneur who wants to use the sharing economy to improve the lives of older adults globally.
